SPF for Skin Longevity

Author: Emily Franco, LME, CLT

When we think of how to improve the longevity of our skin health, most people think of anti-aging serums, treatments, and invasive surgeries. However, one of the most effective and scientifically backed methods for maintaining skin health and longevity is pretty simple, and that’s sunscreen. SPF is not just a summer accessory, it’s a year-round essential for anyone wanting to improve their skin’s youthfulness and longevity.

Daily exposure to UVA/UVB rays, even when the sun isn’t shining directly, can cause cumulative damage over time. This is where SPF comes in. By blocking or absorbing these harmful rays, sunscreen helps protect the skin from the effects of UV exposure, such as hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, fine lines, and much more.

3 Long Term Benefits of SPF:

  1. Prevention of Premature Aging: Regular use of SPF helps prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that keep skin firm and elastic. This means fewer wrinkles, sagging, and age spots over time.
  2. Reduction in Skin Cancer Risk: Daily application of sunscreen significantly lowers the risk of developing skin cancers, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma.
  3. Maintaining Even Skin Tone: Sunscreen helps prevent the development of uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, including dark spots and melasma, which can occur from sun exposure.

Apply sunscreen every day, regardless of the weather, since UV rays can penetrate clouds and windows. You’ll always want to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, and more frequently if swimming or sweating. Use a generous amount for full coverage and don’t forget your ears and neck!

If you make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your daily skin care routine, your skin is sure to have a youthful, healthy glow to it for years to come.
