Botanical Support for Lung Health

Author: Dr. Bonnie Brock, NMD, MPH, RD

As a naturopathic medical doctor and registered dietitian with advanced training in botanical therapeutics, I deeply believe in the power of nature to support the body’s innate capacity for healing. The lungs, essential organs responsible for respiration and gas exchange, are foundational to vitality and resilience. Yet they are also vulnerable to a wide range of challenges, including asthma, post-viral syndromes such as post-COVID recovery, and both acute and chronic cough.

Thoughtfully selected botanical teas and tinctures can play a meaningful supportive role in lung health by soothing inflammation, supporting mucus clearance, and calming irritated airways.

Botanical Support for Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by airway constriction, mucus production, and heightened respiratory sensitivity. While it requires individualized medical management, certain botanicals may offer gentle adjunctive support.

Mullein is one of my most frequently recommended herbs for respiratory support. Traditionally used as a lung tonic, mullein leaf tea is valued for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. It helps calm irritated airways while supporting the gentle release of excess mucus, making it a useful botanical for individuals with asthma-related congestion or tightness.

Licorice root, commonly used in tincture form, is another valuable ally. It supports the respiratory tract by soothing inflamed tissues and modulating inflammatory pathways. Licorice also has mild antispasmodic effects, which may help ease bronchial tension. For safety, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) or practitioner-guided dosing is recommended, especially for those with blood pressure concerns.

Post-COVID and Post-Viral Lung Recovery

After respiratory infections, including COVID-19, many individuals experience lingering cough, chest tightness, reduced exercise tolerance, or a sensation of incomplete breathing. Botanical support during this recovery phase focuses on calming inflammation and restoring respiratory tissue integrity.

Mullein tea again plays an important role here, helping soothe the respiratory tract and assist with mucus clearance. Its gentle action makes it appropriate for longer-term use during recovery.

Lungwort, a lesser-known but traditionally respected respiratory herb, may be used in tincture form to support lung tissue recovery following illness. It has a historical reputation for supporting pulmonary function and resilience after respiratory stress.

Botanicals for Acute and Chronic Cough

Coughing is a protective reflex, but when it becomes persistent or irritating, botanical support can offer relief without suppressing the body’s natural defenses.

Marshmallow root is a classic demulcent herb that soothes and protects the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Taken as a tea or tincture, it forms a gentle, protective layer over irritated tissues, helping reduce dryness, scratchiness, and the urge to cough. It is particularly helpful for dry, nonproductive coughs.

Thyme is an exceptional respiratory herb with bronchodilating and antispasmodic properties. It helps relax bronchial smooth muscle and supports easier breathing. Thyme tea or tincture can be especially useful for spasmodic or productive coughs and is often well tolerated.

A Holistic Perspective

Botanical medicine offers a supportive, systems-based approach to lung health that can be integrated into a broader wellness plan. When chosen thoughtfully and used appropriately, teas and tinctures can complement conventional care by calming inflammation, supporting airway comfort, and promoting recovery.

As always, I encourage patients to consult with a qualified healthcare professional before beginning any new botanical regimen, particularly if they have chronic medical conditions, are pregnant, or are taking medications.

Nature has provided us with a rich pharmacopoeia. When used with respect and clinical discernment, these botanical allies can help support breathing, resilience, and overall vitality.
