C-Section Scar Tissue, Pelvic Floor Pain, and Why It Matters More Than You Think

Author: Dr. Meg Byrne, DC, MS, CAcu

If you have had a C-section, you may have been told you are healed. But many women still feel pain, tightness, or like something is not quite right. That is because healing on the outside is not the same as healing on the inside. A C-section is a major surgery where skin is cut, muscle is moved, and tissue is stretched. As your body heals, it forms scar tissue. This is normal, but scar tissue is not the same as healthy tissue. It can feel tight or thick, it can stick to nearby tissue, and it can limit how things move under the skin. Even if your scar looks good, it may not be moving well.

Your body works as one connected system. Your scar sits just above your pelvic floor, and if that area is tight or stuck, it can pull on the tissues below. This can lead to pelvic pain, pain with exercise, pain during intimacy, low back or hip tightness, or a feeling of weakness or pressure. Many women describe it as something just feeling off, and they are right. This is often a sign that the tissue is not moving the way it should.

Most women are never told to treat their scar. They are told to wait and let it heal, but if the tissue stays stuck, the symptoms often stay too. At Acacia Natural Medicine, we focus on helping the tissue move again. We use a combination of scraping, acupuncture, and manual release to restore normal function. Scraping, also known as IASTM or Gua Sha, helps break up thick and restricted tissue, improves blood flow, and allows the area to move more freely. Acupuncture supports healing from the inside by reducing pain, improving circulation, and calming the nervous system. Manual release uses hands-on treatment to gently free the tissue, reduce tension, and restore normal movement patterns.

When scar tissue is treated, we often see less pain, better core strength, improved pelvic floor function, better lymphatic drainage, and more comfort in daily life and exercise. This is not just about the scar. It is about how your whole body functions together. You do not have to live with tightness or pain. Your body is capable of healing fully, but it needs the right support. If you have had a C-section and something does not feel right, it is worth looking deeper. We see this every day, and we can help.
