Men’s Health and Chiropractic

Author: Dr. Bryce Hendy, DC, DNCert

Lets be honest, most men don’t prioritize their health or seeking the professional opinion of a doctor, until something hurts more than we can tolerate. Whether its nagging back pain, tight shoulders, low energy or an old injury that won’t go away. The typical approach is to push through it….until you can’t. Your body keeps score, and if you’re not taking care of the small issues as they arise, they can turn into a much bigger problem down the road.

Men’s health is more than just muscles and strength and for a lot of guys, men’s health looks like this: working out, staying active and being strong. While those are all important things that men should be doing proactively, true health goes much deeper and includes: Joint and spinal health, nervous system function, recovery and mobility, stress management and sleep quality. If any of those are off performance at work, at home and in the gym takes a hit.

Your nervous system is the control center for everything your body does. It directly effects: strength and coordination, reaction time, recovery, hormonal balance and energy levels. Our spine protects a large part of this control center, the spinal cord. When the spine becomes stiff or restricted in its motion, it can create stress on our nervous system, which can show up as pain, fatigue, tightness or decrease in performance.

Common issues we see with Men:

  • Chronic neck and back pain- long hours sitting, lifting incorrectly or repetitive strain can lead to ongoing discomfort; this if often ignored until it limits what you can do
  • Tight shoulders and limited mobility- whether from work, lifting or golfing, this can affect your ability to do daily tasks and increases risk for injury
  • Old injuries that never fully heal- that old sports injury or lifting injury that never really went away, this creates compensation patterns that create larger issues down the road
  • Stress and burnout- stress doesn’t always show up as mental symptoms, but can present physically like: tight muscles, poor sleep, low energy and decreased recovery. Your body can function well if it is constantly in overdrive.

Chiropractic care is about more than just cracking your back; its about helping your body move better, recover faster and perform at a higher level. This is how chiropractic can help support Men’s health:

  • Improve mobility and flexibility- better joint movement means better workouts, better posture and less strain on your body
  • Reduce pain without relying on medications- identify and address the root cause instead of masking symptoms
  • Support strength and performance- when your body moves well you are able to generate force more efficiently
  • Enhance recovery- a well functioning nervous system helps your body recovery faster from daily work outs and daily strain and stress
  • Prevent future injuries- by correcting imbalances early, this reduces risk for bigger issues later on

At Acacia, we provide more than just a one size fits all crack and go style, we offer an integrated approach addressing the entire system and working on the root of the problem. This can look like: chiropractic adjusting, rehab and exercises, soft tissue and manual therapy; as well as incorporating an in depth blood work analysis with our naturopath, Dr. Brock, to help get a better understanding of your different systems and how the nervous system may be playing a part in that.

Taking care of your body isn’t just about fixing problems — it’s about preventing them. Chiropractic care helps support your spine, nervous system, and overall function so you can move better, feel better, and perform better in every area of life. Because at the end of the day: You only get one body — and how you take care of it now determines how it shows up for you later.
