Setting Clear Goals & Intentions for the New Year

Author: Dr. Bonnie Brock, NMD, RD, MPH

Every January, many of us feel the pull to reset—setting resolutions to finally “get healthy,” “lose weight,” or “eat better.” Yet by early spring, motivation fades, routines slip, and frustration sets in. At Acacia Natural Medicine, I see this pattern every year—not because people are incapable of change, but because most resolutions are built on pressure, perfectionism, or unclear goals.

As both a Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD) and Registered Dietitian (RD), my mission is to help people create health changes that are not only effective but compassionate and sustainable. That requires clarity, intention, and a whole-person approach.

Let’s explore how to create resolutions that truly stick—and what the most successful approach to weight management looks like from an integrative, holistic perspective.

Why Clear Goals Matter More Than Willpower

When goals are vague—“I want to get healthy”—the brain views them as overwhelming. This triggers stress, avoidance, and burnout. Clear, specific goals work because they activate your reward pathways, create momentum, reduce decision fatigue and provide a clear roadmap. With this oradmap, you can track progress, adjust when needed, and celebrate achievements. For example:

Instead of: “I want to eat healthier.”
Try: “I will prepare balanced lunches Monday through Friday.”

Instead of: “I want to exercise more.”
Try: “I will take a 20-minute walk after work three days per week.”

Small, clear goals lead to consistent action—consistency leads to change.

The Power of Intention

If goals define the what, intentions define the why. Intentions connect you to meaning, identity, and the feeling you want your habits to create.  It is easier to commit to a goal when the “why” is clear, as it gives you something concrete to focus upon when the effort needed to reach goals becomes difficult or overwhelming. For a further exploration of this concept, see the Ted Talk or work of leadership expert, Simon Sinek.

Supportive intentions could include:

  • “I want more energy to be present with my loved ones.”
  • “I want to feel calm and grounded in order to be present in my relationships.”
  • “I want to nourish my body so it can perform the activities that I love”
  • “I want to feel strong and resilient so I can age well and enjoy my retirement”

From a naturopathic perspective, intention helps align your healing process with your emotional and physical needs and protects against all-or-nothing thinking.

What Makes New Year Resolutions Stick

There are several tactics one can employ to make lasting changes through the use of new year resolutions. Firstly, you should start small—smaller than you think, since micro-habits beat massive overhauls every time. Focusing on things like one extra glass of water, one daily vegetable, or five minutes of stretching can shift your nervous system and your routines. You should also focus on systems and habits, not outcomes. Reframe “I want to lose weight” into “I will eat meals at consistent times to support stable blood sugar.”  You should also prioritize adding things and actions, not restricting or avoiding them as restriction triggers rebound behavior.  Adding leads to nourishment and the feeling of abundance, like adding more servings of protein, fiber, vegetables and fruits, while banishing items feels restrictive and lacking.  As a Registered Dietitian with 30 years’ experience helping people reach their nutrition and weight goals, I refer to this as the “crowd out” method. Eventually, adding all the healthy foods and habits will leave you less appetite and time for foods and habits that don’t serve you. It is also important to seek and build support and accountability.  A supportive practitioner or community makes behavior change smoother, less isolating, and far more sustainable.  At Acacia Natural Medicine, we work tirelessly to help patients create customized systems that align with their physiology, lifestyle, and goals.
