What Professional Sports has Taught us About Care

Author: Dr. Meg Byrne, DC, MS, CAcu

I remember the first time I walked into a professional clubhouse as the team chiropractor. It was spring training with the San Diego Padres, and what struck me wasn’t the size of the facility or the level of the athletes. It was how much they paid attention to their bodies. Not just in the gym, but in the training room, in the way they talked about what felt off, in the seriousness with which they treated a tight hip or a shoulder that wasn’t moving right. That standard is what I brought back to Scottsdale, and it’s what I hold every patient to, whether they play in the majors or they play golf on weekends.

Here is what working in professional sports taught me that I don’t think gets said enough. The athletes who stayed on the field longest were not the ones with the fewest injuries. They were the ones who understood that pain leaving the body does not mean the body is healed. A pitcher who felt good after three days of treatment still had tissue that needed six more weeks to fully rebuild. The ones who respected that arc stayed healthy. The ones who trusted the feeling over the biology came back in worse shape, and sometimes they didn’t come back at all.

The same thing is true for the golfer who tweaks his low back on the ninth hole and feels fine by Thursday. It is true for the woman who runs five days a week and pushes through the hip pain because it’s manageable. The body is very good at quieting pain signals before the structural work is done, and that gap between feeling better and being better is where most re-injuries are born. Pain receptors report to the brain faster than tissue actually heals. That is not an opinion. That is how the biology works, and once a patient really understands it, the whole conversation about treatment changes.

What I do is look at the whole system, because a shoulder problem is never just a shoulder, and a low back problem is never just a vertebra. When I put my hands on an athlete, I’m feeling the joint above, the joint below, the fascia that connects the kinetic chain from the foot to the neck, the places where the body is compensating and asking the wrong structure to do the work of the right one. That is where injuries come from, not from one bad movement, but from a pattern the body has been running for months, sometimes years, waiting for the load to get heavy enough to break it.

The standard of care I learned in professional sports doesn’t belong only to professional athletes. It never did. If you are asking your body to perform, whether that means a round of golf, a half marathon, a ski trip with your kids, or just moving through your day without guarding, you deserve to know what is actually happening in the tissue, and you deserve care that treats the whole arc, not just the episode. That’s what we do at Acacia. Text 480-702-1537 to get started.
