After a hard workout, your body isn’t asking for a complicated recovery protocol — it’s asking for electrolytes, amino acids, and something that actually tastes good. This five-ingredient smoothie does all three without a single scoop of chalky protein powder in sight. I’ve been making versions of this for years, long before “recovery nutrition” became a buzzword, because real food has always worked. Drink it within thirty minutes of finishing your workout and let your body do the rest.
Why Each Ingredient Earns Its Place
• Coconut milk — Rich in potassium and magnesium, two electrolytes your muscles burn through during exercise. The MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) are rapidly absorbed for quick energy without spiking blood sugar.
• Avocado — One of the most potassium-dense foods on the planet, plus magnesium and healthy monounsaturated fats that reduce exercise-induced inflammation.
• Frozen banana — Replenishes muscle glycogen fast, delivers a natural hit of potassium and B6, and gives this smoothie the thick, creamy texture that makes it feel like a treat.
• Hemp seeds — A complete plant protein containing all nine essential amino acids, including branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) critical for muscle repair. No chalky protein powder needed.
• Sea salt — The ingredient people skip and the reason they cramp. Sodium is your primary electrolyte lost in sweat. A pinch here matters.
The Recipe
Makes 1 serving • Ready in under 5 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup full-fat coconut milk
• ½ ripe avocado
• 1 frozen banana
• 2 tbsp hemp seeds
• 1 pinch fine sea salt
INSTRUCTIONS
• Night before: Peel and freeze your banana. This keeps the smoothie thick and cold without watering it down with ice.
• Blend: Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on high for 45–60 seconds until completely smooth and creamy.
Drink immediately: Pour and drink within 30 minutes of your workout for the best recovery window.
